post Top Evil League of Evil Applications

October 16th, 2008

Filed under: My Movies — Pinto @ 11:05 pm
So, I’m surfing (Vimeo as I’ve learned to hate YouTube) to see how our boy Vagabond (below) is doing…

and I see that a handful of applications are getting some serious play. Sure everyone’s seen Tur-Mohel…

The Jewish humour behind this DVD shoe-in might be a one note gag, but it’s a beautiful, flawless note.

What I can’t figure out is why some other clips haven’t got more attention. Maybe it’s their lack of boobies. For instance, why the heck isn’t the Steward topping the charts?

They might not have a song or Tur-Mohel’s HD standards, but they blew the other productions away with the ambition of their project. While most of these clips are single set productions, these guys pulled together something of tremendous scope based entirely on the ELE application form (no mean feat during the two week deadline). The CG, writing, and acting is top notch. It’s hard to imagine the effort that went into this.

Alot of weight has been given to the musical aspects of the contest, which is great. There’s been a ton of good stuff, but my favorite song so far comes from the Final Straw (sorry John, I just heard ours way too many bloody times).

Besides the cool song (”I don’t need shark bazookas” makes me shed a little tear every time), it’s a great gimmick in the vein of Dr.Horrible’s lameness. There’s just something endearing about a lame super villain. Mind you, I’m still pissed at the Final Straw for our codec/audio sync issues that drove me to climb a clock tower with an uzi.

While I was originally sceptical when I clicked on Darthaul’s application… it’s awful damn good.

It’s funny. It has a good song. It’s original. It’s whacked out and crazy.

Lastly, in the aforementioned booby department, here’s Evil Lucretia.

She had one of the earliest applications, includes a song, a story, and feels more like Dr. Horrible’s style than most.

So, these are the hidden gems that I’ve been watching (and hopefully Clan Whedon has too). If I could get over my hatred of YouTube’s video quality, I’d be pointing out DIE-ronic and Lady Laday as well. Luckily, my hatred is far too deep. The competition is intimidating enough already.

  1. Ahh! Blogging about everything that I plan to blog about! No fair!

(Yes, I’m dicking around reading blogs on my birthday…what of it?)

Otherwise, standard agreement with all your choices, particularly Tur-Mohel.

  2. Well, Happy Birthday anyway, Mr. Johnny-come-lately. *heh*

  3. A lot of those YouTube videos have a button you can click which makes the quality better. “Watch in High Quality”, I think it’s called. Though, I forget it’s there half of the time. Or I’m too lazy to click it.

Hey! Maybe you could click it on my application?

I am such a whore. But please do tell me what you think.

    And that’ll be five dollar.

  4. That’s pretty good, man.
You’re right. There’s some pretty nice high quality versions on YouTube (though I still like Vimeo better). I just didn’t have the right codec (or brain) to make mine sing on there. Heck, I’m from Brandon, Manitoba. I’m lucky I got one of these here blinky light boxes at all.

  5. You’ve definately got a few of my favorites on that list - Tur Mohel, The Steward, and Final Straw were already among my top five - and I just loved the vagabond. Hadnt seen it till today - hillarious ending, “Hits on head with bottle guy” classic…but you seem to have missed one particularly fabulous entry - Fury of Solace…

Granted, I may be a bit biased as I happen to be IN that particular submission but I do think it meets your excellent standards of excellence.

    Check it out! http://www.vimeo.com/1941670

  6. But EVERYONE’S seen Fury of Solace (just like Tur-Mohel). I was trying to point out four that maybe they hadn’t.
Having said that, Whedon should hire you guys to help with promotion of the next one. You’re frickin everywhere!

  7. Thanks for the kind words on me video. I shall spare your life when I take over Canada. Of course, I have to conquer the United States and Sweden first.

Why is Sweden before Canada? Personal reasons…

Doesn’t know where Sweden actually is,

  8. Ahahahahahha. Yes. We are everywhere.

I am also baffled that the Steward doesn’t make more favorites lists.

  10. Hokay, an ATHUG site? That’s pretty cool.
    Still, I gotta ask.
Do you guys have jobs? Where in the “H” “E” double hockey sticks do you find the time?
And a pre-emptive “no way”, John. I am NOT doing a Vagabond webcomic. I’m forgetting what my family looks like as it is. That, and the whole riding on Whedon’s coat tails thing is starting to make me feel pretty oogy.

  11. Pinto, we are touched by your interest in the day-to-day affairs of Henchmen. You may be pleased to know I have personally answered your query on the Steward’s blog, located at http://www.ATHUG.org.
    Thank you,

I can’t help but think that you over looked the sheer GENIUS behind my application.

  13. Ok, sorry to be the attention whore, but gotta point out that Make Me is rocking his own website as well at JustMakeMe.com with ring-tones and comics and all sorts of classy junk on its way. Of course in these tough economic times I think you would be wise to invest in novelty Make Me t-shirts and maternity dresses…some day they’ll be worth the asking price!

  14. His majesty Prince Darthaul of Pluton has insisted that I broadcast some of his concerns to everyone on earth (who I feel safe in assuming all regularly view this website). He is left puzzled and enraged by the lack of uproarious acclaim he has received regarding his luminous charm and unparalleled accomplishments. He insists that he will grant amnesty (in some form) to all of the inhabitants of this dimension exhibiting enough logic to become his loyal subjects and ardent promoters. Should you refuse his offer you will be compressed into an infinitely dense ball of hate along with all other matter occupying this dimension. I have been asked to show those with a willingness to survive complete dimensional collapse to the past chronicles of Prince Darthaul, in which he does battle with the self-righteous malcontent Diplodocus for the Amulet of Zendar. View this most epic battle at - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KRtqVkX7Q4

P.S. Darthaul is in urgent need of more earth foods, please send edible donations to - Kyles “Garage”, Earth

  16. Dear Vagabond,

I’m starting an (evil) band called “The Broken Camelbacks” and we need a horn section. Interested?

Also, if “Hits on Head With Bottle Guy” can do a pan-pipe thing on his bottle, maybe he could sit in for a session.

    Thanks for the kudos.

  17. Great list Pinto :) I’m a big fan of Tur Mohel too - hadn’t seen The Steward before! Have you had a watch of our application? Sorry for the shameless shameless plug but I’d love to know what you reckon to it. We only had an afternoon to make it so there’s no complex songs in it unfortunately (and you’ll have to excuse our shoddy acting too!) But it’s a laugh anyway :)

Also does anyone know if they have already contacted the winners of this contest?

    Comment by Allison — November 12, 2008 @ 12:05 pm

  21. Yeah, those are all really good. Damn, there’s alot of good ones. Like I said on the Signal, good bloody luck picking ten!
I haven’t heard of anyone getting the call yet, which makes me kinda leery of making it on a DVD for the holidays. Then I wonder how they’re getting hold of folks and whether I should be just assuming all those 1-800 calls are telemarketers. Then I wonder how they’re handling things like permissions, or how they’re making sure every applicant has all their permissions. But then I check in on the wife and kid, and everything goes into perspective…
for about a minute and a half before the whole vicious cycle starts up again.

  23. You know, just the fact that a character I played is getting tertiary appearance treatment in other people’s stuff is tragically gratifying. And it’s okay, since you’re already doing a webcomic with a kinda-me-likeness in there. It’s like real fame, but fewer calories.
…and now you’ve got me thinking about some of the seemingly-telemarketers I’ve hung up on in the last two weeks…you don’t think - !! Wait! Whedon people! Come back! I’ve been distracted! One of my neighbors turned my cat into 37 cents! It’s not my fault!

Ah, well. Community theatre again this year, I guess.

  24. Here’s a big ol’ belated “Thank You!”. We missed this post last fall. You’re absolutely right about the Steward, ManWithPez and I thought it was top notch. Thanks again for the recognition.
