post A.T.H.U.G.

Wally Dempsey and Jason Hager, the gang that made the ELE Application “The Steward,” are pulling on my heart strings. Not only have they made a cool website/blog/webcomic based on a Whedon fanfilm in the time honored tradition of penniless copyright infringement solely for the fun of it, but I sense the upcoming appearance of a familiar, scruffy-haired villain. Check it out.

I’m truly envious of the art style. I have yet to master or settle on a style that I find clean and consistently fulfilling. I keep finding others out there that are doing what I’m trying to, but far better (and seemingly effortlessly). The A.T.H.U.G Comic is certainly no exception. Be sure to take a look at everything they’ve done over at www.athug.org.

post Rebooting Reboot… Again

A buddy of mine, I will lovingly call “Big Pants,” pointed out that the gang in Vancouver are taking another crack at the once great animated series Reboot. Now, I loved Reboot. It became so much more than just a cartoon, and when they did that hilarious Season 3 synopsis musical to a Gilbert & Sullivan tune, I made most everyone who came to my apartment watch it. The only problem is that the made for TV/straight to DVD movies they made years later (”Daemon Rising,” and “My Two Bobs”) spiralled into mediocrity away from the white shining light of the series (so very much like the Futurama movies).

However, this time the once Mainframe now Rainmaker production company is hoping to take an all new stab at it. They have a handful of series/movie ideas that they want fans to vote on. They also have a pretty good webcomic that carries on from where “My Two Bobs” left off. It also drew my attention to the Zeros to Heroes site (a social network for comics and artists). All in all, it was pretty interesting stuff.

Dry (whose other job is to point out flaws in the storytelling of the strip) speaks his mind in “Admittedly, it Was a BIG Panel.”

I see Whedon cleared some stuff up concerning Dollhouse over at Whedonesque this weekend. Now I feel a little bad mocking the mixed messages in the Signal podcast interview that should be out next month.

Thanks again to Lynn LeFey (and that Bob Green guy) for the kick-ass starship models that helped make “The Getaway.”

post Top Evil League of Evil Applications

So, I’m surfing (Vimeo as I’ve learned to hate YouTube) to see how our boy Vagabond (below) is doing…

and I see that a handful of applications are getting some serious play. Sure everyone’s seen Tur-Mohel…

The Jewish humour behind this DVD shoe-in might be a one note gag, but it’s a beautiful, flawless note.

What I can’t figure out is why some other clips haven’t got more attention. Maybe it’s their lack of boobies. For instance, why the heck isn’t the Steward topping the charts?

They might not have a song or Tur-Mohel’s HD standards, but they blew the other productions away with the ambition of their project. While most of these clips are single set productions, these guys pulled together something of tremendous scope based entirely on the ELE application form (no mean feat during the two week deadline). The CG, writing, and acting is top notch. It’s hard to imagine the effort that went into this.

Alot of weight has been given to the musical aspects of the contest, which is great. There’s been a ton of good stuff, but my favorite song so far comes from the Final Straw (sorry John, I just heard ours way too many bloody times).

Besides the cool song (”I don’t need shark bazookas” makes me shed a little tear every time), it’s a great gimmick in the vein of Dr.Horrible’s lameness. There’s just something endearing about a lame super villain. Mind you, I’m still pissed at the Final Straw for our codec/audio sync issues that drove me to climb a clock tower with an uzi.

While I was originally sceptical when I clicked on Darthaul’s application… it’s awful damn good.

It’s funny. It has a good song. It’s original. It’s whacked out and crazy.

Lastly, in the aforementioned booby department, here’s Evil Lucretia.

She had one of the earliest applications, includes a song, a story, and feels more like Dr. Horrible’s style than most.

So, these are the hidden gems that I’ve been watching (and hopefully Clan Whedon has too). If I could get over my hatred of YouTube’s video quality, I’d be pointing out DIE-ronic and Lady Laday as well. Luckily, my hatred is far too deep. The competition is intimidating enough already.

This was the BEST costume (and only picture I took) at Manitoba’s Comic Con this year.

If you don’t know who this is supposed to be, quit dicking around reading blogs and go watch the Venture Brothers.

I mean really!

It took a while to set a half decent copy up on a Vimeo (the quality on YouTube is even worse than I thought), but here’s…
