July 31st, 2008
I’m gonna geek out a bit here. However, all things considered, it probably isn’t that big of a surprise.
Sandra and I watched the last six episodes of Avatar: the Last Airbender last night, and I’m still all awash in emotion. For the longest time, the show was a guilty pleasure of ours, as every once in a while it did remind you its target audience was around the 12-year old mark. However, the overplot, setting, scripts, animation, characters, and production quality have all gradually improved over the years (from the show’s already impressive beginnings in 2005). I have constantly been blown away by the writers’ ability to give exactly enough to make you happy, and hold back the optimum amount to keep you wanting more. The 4 part series finale was the perfect end to this magical show. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that kind of heart and soul or quality from a live action production (let alone an animated one), and I’m almost certain none are going to be able to match the bitter sweet brilliance of its conclusion (I’m looking at you, Lost).
My new greatest regret of not attending San Diego’s ComicCon this year, is missing the chance to shake the hands of the shows creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Flame-ee-o, gentlemen. Flame-ee-o.
If any of these ramblings have piqued your interest, take a look at Avatar on DVD. They’re everywhere if you’re looking.

Hi-di-ho all.
It was kinda nice to be more or less removed from the ways of the world for a week or so, but some damn interesting stuff was afoot while I was gone.
I was a little late for work this morning as every pair of socks I own was knocked off by finally watching The Dark Knight on Saturday. I just can’t say enough about that flick. The out-fricking-standing, no CG cinematography was only outdone by the “almost every scene is the Pacino/DeNiro coffee shop from Heat” calibre of the script and acting. In a movie that should have been pure scene stealing Joker, EVERYONE got a chance to shine. Comic geek aside, this was a fantastic film. For the eight people left in the western world who have yet to see it, get up and go right now.
ComicCon sounded like it was a blast. I should really find the time to go one of these years. I read this morning that Whedon is gonna host a contest for 3 minute Evil League of Evil applications (a la Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog). In the space of ten minutes I’ve come to terms that I’m a talentless hack whose only accomplishments have been on Joss Whedon’s coat-tails, wrote the three minute script, and planned the production all on the Canadian taxpayers’ dime (so, you know… sorry about that).
Speaking of coat-tail riding, here’s Chloe Unleashed (I mean really. You think she’da seen it coming). Will the grieving widow show her combat expertise by leaving her highly defendable position and closing for hand-to-hand with her shotgun? Only time will tell.
So, came home to some book orders and some reassurance on the completion of Magellan: Chapter One. Things are good.

Just about done the Edmonton trip, and I’m exceedingly eager to get back and tackle what’s left of Magellan Affair to finally get it up and started. Only one day of fun and a couple more of pain in the ass driving to go. I seem to remember doing the trip in a single day before, but I also seem to remember being really stupid. I’m also ready to get going on the third book (“A Shrewd and Knavish Sprite ”). This time around is going to involve a good deal of research and some hat in hand begging to the Manitoba and Canadian Arts’ Councils. Neither really recognizes self-published authors, but my books and sales smack of enough professionalism to overcome at least that obstacle.
Anyhow, here’s “A Dry Run” with apologies to the folks that have been waiting to see more of Dry… mostly because of what happens to him.

I’m a crappy house guest.
Here’s “Uzi Beats Rock.”
July 18th, 2008
It’s “Ten O’Clock” and all is far from well.
If you haven’t done so, go check out Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog . It’s good for a laugh (especially for the folks who always wanted to see Captain Tightpants beat the crap out of Doogie Howser).
In related news, if you can’t make it to the book signing in Edmonton (smirk) git yer butt to San Diego and Comic Con . Joss and the gang for Dr. Horrible! Eoin Colfer with new Artemis Fowl stuff! Steve Purcell of Sam & Max awesomness! There’s a ton of other reasons to go, but those three are keepers.
So, excuses…
Sadly, I squandered away my comic strip buffer by pulling a solid 30 or so hours editing the first chapter of The Magellan Affair this week. Now, the family and I are on the road to Edmonton and parts unknown until the 27th . I’ll have my laptop and try to have the strips on time, but damned if family just doesn’t come first. Where the heck are my priorities?

Isn’t that a funny play on words? Aren’t I clever?
Anyway, it’s been far too long since I’ve done anything to promote the books and movie, so I thought I’d fill you in on what I’m up to.
On July 24th I’ll be in Fillion’s home town of Edmonton, AB for a book signing at the South Point Chapters (3227 Calgary Trail NW). Things get started around 4PM, so if you’re in the area, stop on by.
On October 11-12th I’ll be at the Manitoba Comic Con in Winnipeg, MB peddling the books and webcomic, as well as the first chapter or two of The Magellan Affair. Jamie’s not sure if the Browncoat Saloon is gonna run this year, and that would be a downright shame if it didn’t.
I’ll also be presenting at Brandon Teachers’ Association LIFT Conference (whose tagline should totally be “Why go to SAG when you can go to LIFT?”) on November 28th. I’m going to be doing morning and afternoon seminars on Challenging Your Students’ Creative Potential, discussing ways to promote students’ creative skills and the various contests and awards available to them.

People are getting shot up all over the place in “The Harder They Fall.” That was a nice thing about Firefly. Once they started shooting, you could be pretty sure that a main character was going to get tagged… Waitaminute. Did anyone get shot when they raided the space station in “War Stories?” I don’t think they did… Hm. That’s not very realistic at all.
Sorry Clayton. You can blame Beyette. He was awful intent on getting they guy with the uzi.

Things start to get ugly in “A Difference of Opinion.” Thanks for your patience, folks. See you on Monday.

There’s a reason friends never really want to help move.
It always sucks.
After a week of annoying little problems (most of which were caused by my lack of patience and 1989 understanding of computers), the move to a new web host is done and the blog and webcomic are back up. Sorry for the scare, though I can truly appreciate the humour behind a Firefly-related strip getting cancelled just as it’s gaining steam.
As I’m a bit of a jerk, I think I’m going to use this dark time for the Rebellion to enable me to start a bit of a Mosquito buffer. I’ll get the next comic up as soon as I get home today, and continue to do my damnest to stay on schedule. I know I promised a couple of strips on Monday, which is turning out to be kind of a lie. There you go. I’m a jerk and a liar.
And a very special thanks to the folks who showed their concern on the Firefly forums. It’s nice to know you’re out there.

We’re jumping ship to a new webhost provider, so it might take a day or two to sort everything out. I’ve got today’s strip done but wanted to wait until everything settled before posting it. Sorry about this, but look for two new strips on Monday.
